BS 99001

BS 99001:2022 is a brand new standard which provides additional Quality Management System requirements and guidance to those specified in ISO 9001:2015. BS 99001 is specifically for organisations operating in the built environment sector. The built environment sector covers construction related organisations (tiers 1, 2, 3 and so on) large and small. It is only applicable to companies working within this sector who conform to or have an ambition to conform to the requirements of ISO 9001.

What is BS 99001?

It is a derivative of ISO 9001 focussed on the needs of the construction industry. It has not been designed as a stand alone standard but sets out additional requirements based on the existing ISO 9001 quality management system requirements.

When will BS 99001 be published?

The standard has been in development for a number of years and following its approval, the standard is expected to be published as a live standard on 15th July 2022.

Our involvement in the development of BS 99001

Atlas Certification have been active members of the development committee of BS 99001 since its inception in 2020 utilising our construction sector experience to develop a set of additional quality-based requirements specific to the construction sector.

Why is BS 99001 necessary?

The construction industry recognises the need for improvement when compared with other industry sectors in the UK. This new standard incorporates the quality steps necessary to tackle the common quality issues experienced in the construction industry today.

Is BS 99001 linked to the UK’s Building Safety Regulations?

The tragic fall-out of the Grenfell incident has influenced the development of BS 99001 to ensure that better quality processes are developed and to meet building safety legislation.

Differences between ISO 9001 and BS 99001

While the fundamental principles of ISO9001 have not been changed, there are many additional requirements introduced to ensure that enhancements are made in the construction environment to deliver the best possible project quality.

BS99001 is not a replacement to ISO 9001:2015.  It is an enhancement to ISO 9001 and its requirements are in addition to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015.  If you don’t currently have a quality management system certified to ISO 9001:2015, it is possible to be certified for ISO 9001 and BS99001 at the same time.  They need not be separate processes.

Becoming certified to BS 99001

The key benefit of the new standard is that better quality delivers lower costs and minimises the time taken to deliver a project overall. Thus, implementing the standard should drive profits and the reputation of companies that adopt the disciplines. It is likely that the standard becomes an industry norm (as similar systems have been within Aerospace and Oil & Gas) and that clients specify certification to the standard as a pre-requisite of tendering.
